Founded in the late 1960s, the campus chapter of the Mexican American student organization Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A) consisted of over 40 students in its first year. Providing volunteer tutors and advisors, members also sponsored an annual Cinco de Mayo celebration for many years. Shown here is the celebration in 1976, which, according to the student newspaper, drew one of the largest crowds to the college up to that point.

The 1970 Cinco de Mayo celebration consisted of three days of events with speakers, music, and dance. Students from high schools throughout Los Angeles attended the event. The speakers included activist and educator Sal Castro, historian and former CSU Dominguez Hills professor Roldolfo Acuña, educator and politician Richard Alatorre, and sociologist Jaime Raigoza.
