Cadence

Cadence watched as Lord Zaar called Mason to his side.

Her normally timid boy practically skipped to get to the giant dragon lord, slipping his chubby little hand into the lord’s massive one without a moment’s hesitation.

“Now, when it’s time to go, we’ll go right away without a fuss, do you understand?” R’hys asked Mason.

“Yes, Lord Zaar,” Mason said happily.

“Good boy,” R’hys said, lavishing her son with a half-smile.

He led them to the staircase in the great room.

“The light is yellow,” Mason said.

“That’s okay, because you’re with me,” R’hys told him, glancing up as if to be sure Cadence was listening too. “You must never go downstairs without me though, no matter what color that light is. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Lord Zaar,” Mason said.

Cadence nodded to him.

“Very good,” he said, his cerulean blue eyes glowing slightly as he gazed at her for an extra moment. “Let’s explore, shall we?”

“Yes,” Mason said.

“May I lift you up and carry you?” R’hys asked the boy. “Just until we get downstairs?”

Mason put his arms up immediately.

Cadence stifled a gasp.

Mason loved to be held, but he had never been held by a stranger before. Cadence was amazed at the trusting way he simply waited for R’hys to carry him.

When Mason had his little arms around R’hys’s neck, R’hys opened the door and carried him downstairs.

Cadence followed after them, determined to stay close.

The staircase opened into a room like she had never seen before.

The walls were made of glass, and even in the darkness, she could see the ocean outside, glimmering with starlight.

Inside, the floor was made of tiny, pale tiles that shimmered when they caught the light, so that they almost appeared to be moving. A deep, empty shelf ran around the perimeter of the room at waist height, and another far over her head.

The furnishings were simple - sectional sofas that appeared to be made of smooth-finished composite, and dome lights on the ceiling.

“I’m going to put you up here, Mason,” Lord Zaar said, lifting the boy onto the lower shelf.

“Wow,” Mason said. “This is neat.”

“I’m glad you think so,” Lord Zaar chuckled. “Cadence, I think you’ll be happiest up here as well.”

She could have easily scrambled up if she weren’t wearing the gown, but it was going to be trickier with it on. The last thing she wanted to do was rip it.

“Allow me,” he said softly.

Before she could protest, he had lifted her gently onto the shelf like she was no bigger than Mason.

“Thank you,” she said.

Though the material had appeared to be hard, it was actually soft and comfortable. It subtly molded around her as she settled in.

R’hys studied her appraisingly for a moment, until a low tone sounded, seeming to come from all around them at once.

“That’s the one-minute warning,” Lord Zaar told them. “If you ever find yourself in a room and you hear that tone, it means the tide is coming in.”

Cadence gaped at him, then looked to the door.

“You’ll be safe,” he assured her. “I thought you and Mason might enjoy experiencing a taste of what it’s like to use these rooms.
