CHAPTER
TEN
RACHAEL
My spoon dragged through the oatmeal in my bowl, swirling the milk to mix it in better. No one else was in the kitchen yet, and I appreciated the quiet in the morning light while I sorted my jumble of thoughts. I wore my Rudolph onesie with a sweatshirt on top and an extra pair of fuzzy socks over my hooves. I probably looked weird, but man, I was warm.
Iâd almost donned the Grinch onesie last night, but it felt a little weird after the whole closet incident.
Max was behaving strangely, and I didnât know what to do about it. I couldnât reveal how I felt about him, obviously. Last nightâs moment in The Closet proved he wasnât interested in me, not with the way he clammed up as soon as I started flirting back for real. But I also couldnât avoid him. We all saw how well that went down. Hint: it had led to the whole closet incident.
So I was stuck between awkward and uncomfortable, with no clear path to normalcy.
A door closed in the loft area, followed by footsteps down the stairs. I took a bite of my mostly cooled oatmeal as Rob came into the kitchen.
âMorning, kiddo,â he said, reaching for a mug. He pulled out his tea stash. âMerry Christmas Eve.â
I saluted. âSame to you.â
He filled the tea kettle with water. âHow was the room last night? Any warmer?â
How much lying was acceptable this early in the morning? I cringed.
He caught it. âNot any warmer, then?â
âI layered up more, so that helped.â
Rob shook his head. âThen the problem is in the ducts. It hasnât always been this bad, right?â
âNo, not this bad, but itâs always been chilly in that room. Iâm used to layering. And I always bring my weighted blanket.â
âYou shouldnât have to, though. We need to get someone out here to look at it, but I doubt anyone can fit us in this close to Christmas.â
âWhat about a space heater?â Max asked just behind me, his voice low and husky from sleep.
My shoulders tensed, but I pretended they didnât. Maybe he didnât notice the effect he had on me.
He padded into the kitchen in a Henley and charcoal joggers, then pulled out a bowl and a box of Frosted Mini Wheats.
âA space heater could work,â Rob said.
âI donât want to spike the electric bill.â
Rob gave me a look, shaking his head. âDonât worry about that, Rach.â He dunked the tea bag in his hot water. âWorry more about where weâll find one on Christmas Eve.â
I heard the challenge in his voice. He liked having a project, and if I was a betting girl, Iâd put money on the fact that he would recruit my dad and be out of the house within the next hour on the hunt for a space heater.
âHow is work going?â Rob asked, dropping a slice of bread in the toaster.
âItâs work.â I shrugged. âThe kids are a hoot, but the parents are less fun.â
âWho do you deal with more?â
âItâs about half and half.
