GOSSET (N.M.)

Production: About 1.2 million bottles annually.

Gosset is one of the oldest companies, of any kind, in the world. In 1584,

Pierre Gosset began making still red wine from his vineyard in Aÿ. When the region’s wines started sparkling in the 18th century, the family shifted its focus to champagne.

The house stayed in the family for a remarkable 16 generations until the Renaud-Cointreau group, owners of the Cognac house Pierre Frapin, purchased it in 1994. Chef de cave Jean-Pierre Mareigner, who joined Gosset in 1983, continued to make the wines through the transition and still works for the house.

Gosset has only 2.5 acres of vineyards, so purchases most of the grapes it needs. The négociant sources from the same 45 villages each year—and mostly from the same growers—and vinifies the haul from each village separately. Malolactic is mostly blocked.
