He wandered for 45 years through many cities and villages in the Ganges valley area, and constantly taught his Dhamma2 to those who were interested. He did not write any books or scriptures. His close followers did not do so either. Yet, shortly after his passing, some of his oldest followers held a council, which was to be followed by several others afterwards. During that first council, hundreds of Arahants (enlightened individuals), led by the Buddha’s longest living disciple, Ananda, gathered to formulate a cluster of community rules, as they remembered it from the Buddha’s teachings. During the subsequent councils, the teachings were expanded, and summaries, reflections, and important points of teachings were noted and grouped.
