I’m still grieving for Odda-and-Palli when a lamprey kills Dimsalan. Pudgy, nimble Dimsalan with thirty-five siblings and a ready smile. The warm, cheery man who moved like a Freehold gangster is unmoving now.

At the funeral, twenty-one of Dimsalan’s siblings hold a canopy aloft. His youngest brother drapes a floral scarf around my neck, and the petals smell of a better world.

Afterward, I join Wing Supervisor Hallmark in Vo’s infirmary room. She lost a few ribs in the same attack. She doesn’t look pleased to see us but she also doesn’t look pissed. Not bad, for Vo.

I drape the floral scarf around the tissue-printing device adhered to her side.

She touches a petal. “Too many funerals.”

“Yeah,” I say.

“Zamia is down three pilots.” Hallmark’s craggy face is heavy with grief. “Some days I . . . I can’t see a way forward. Some days hit too hard.”

“We’ll hit back soon.” Vo takes his hand. “We’ll hit back harder.”
