Michael opened his eyes to see the soft gray hues of the sunrise streaming through the sinister dome. His hand still clung to hers, but he was not in a burned-out building. Blinking his stinging eyes, he made out the sight of trees and the dome. Lying next to him was a young girl, their hands still clutching each other’s. Putrid smoke lingered in the air, and small flames danced in scattered spots throughout the village. His head stung like acid was poured on it, and one arm lay covered in oozing blisters. He bolted into an upright sitting position. ANASTASIA!!! Ran through his mind.

His eyes darted around the area. Where is Anastasia? His breathing became labored as his pulse quickened. His eyes continued to search. Then, from behind, a hand settled on his shoulder.

“Looking for me?” Anastasia came around and knelt down next to him.

Michael felt weak as the adrenaline surge left his body. As he tried to speak, he felt a burning sensation in his throat, accompanied by a scratchy, hoarse sound. Releasing the other girl’s hand, Michael flung his arms around Anastasia. Speaking in a coarse whisper, his words barely audible, he said, “I thought I lost you.”

“You saved at least half the village but collapsed before you could get out of that last building. I knew you had to be close when I got Rada out of his house, so I came looking for you.” She handed him some water. "Here, this will soothe your throat."

Michael studied her face as he drank the cool water. Covered with soot and ash, anguished red eyes, frazzled hair, dried blood on her cheek . . . she had never been so beautiful to him. He embraced her, almost as if he was afraid if he let go, she would vanish. He whispered in her ear, “Anastasia, marry me.”
