An hour had passed since Melanie had roused from her drug-induced sleep, and still no Jason. Heâd promised to be here. The rejection hit hard. Heâd walked away fifteen years ago, so why had she thought things had changed?
âStop that.â Keith stood in the doorway with his arms crossed.
She scrunched her brow. âWhat?â
âYou know what. That someone-hurt-my-puppy look.â He blew out a breath. âJasonâs on his way. He had something he had to take care of.â
Tears stung her eyes. She shifted her gaze to the window, away from Keithâs scrutinizing stare. âGot it.â
âI donât think you do.â
She whipped her head around and faced him. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
He pursed his lips, appearing to struggle with what to say. âHe was a wreck waiting to see you. The man paced like a caged animal.â Keith scratched his jaw. âHe cares about you...a lot.â
She gaped at him. âHow do you know that?â
âCome on, Melanie. I can see it every time he looks at you.â Keith exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. âJust donât give up on him. Okay?â
She nodded. The news eased her doubt, but until Jason confessed his feelings, she told herself to be cautious. Living through another abandonment from someone she cherished... Sheâd never recover.
âIââ
Jason burst in the door. His hair shot out in multiple directions, most likely from the stocking cap he held in his hand. His gaze found hers. âIâm so sorry. I was called away.â
âItâs fine. Keith said youâd be back as soon as possible.â She picked at the blanket lying across her.
âIâm going to go hunt down some food.â With that, Keith ducked out of the room.
Silence hung in the air as Jason made his way to her bedside.
He cupped her cheek. âI know that look.â
His touch sent butterflies fluttering in her stomach. Her brown eyes met his green. âWhat look?â Her voice shook.
âThe one where you donât think you deserve to be treasured.â He leaned in, his face mere inches from hers. His breath fanned her cheeks.
She swallowed. The man knew her well even after years apart.
His gaze dropped to her lips and drifted back to her eyes.
Time stood still. Was he asking permission to kiss her?
The door whooshed open, and Jason stepped back.
âI came to...â Nurse Janie bustled in. Her gaze darted between them. âOops. Sorry about that. I can come back.â She turned to leave.
âNo, come on in.â Jason lowered himself into the chair.
âYou sure?â Janie sent a questioning look to Melanie.
Disappointment filled her. Maybe it had been her imagination, and Jason hadnât wanted to kiss her after all. âPositive.â
âAll right then.â Janie rounded the bed and checked Melanieâs vitals. âDoc said you can go home as soon as you eat breakfast, and he stops by to give you the stamp of approval.â
âSounds good.â But where would she go? Back to Jasonâs house? Or had he changed his mind about that?
Janie pivoted. Hands on her hips, she glared at Jason. âAnd you, son, better take care of this young lady.
