18. Sparky, Fifty-Five timeline

Sparky climbed the stairs to the kitchen, his older twin following behind. “They’re right there,” he said, pointing to a white plate at one end of the kitchen table. He moved around and sat at the other end.

The older twin picked up the magnifying glass next to the plate and studied the surveillance bugs. “This is all of them?”

“I’ve run everything a half-dozen times, indoors and out. They’re simple devices, so they show up like spotlights on a boosted spec.”

The older twin toyed with the magnifying glass. “Lagerford has the resources to buy the most sophisticated bugs on the planet. I wonder why he went on the cheap?”

“Maybe he didn’t realize we’d be geared up to see them?” Sparky felt a chill. “Or maybe he’s in a hurry and this was the fastest way to gather whatever information he’s trying to get on us.”

“Maybe we do something in the future that threatens or hurts him, and all this is to stop that.”

“You know what? I don’t care,” Sparky snapped, spit flying from his mouth. “Lagerford offered us a hundred million. Now that we’re ready to collect, we find him spying on us. If we don’t get our hands around this soon, we’ll never see that money.”

“Do we know if the Lagerford you had downstairs ever told the one from this timeline about the promise?”

“Who else would send bugs?”

His twin twitched a shoulder. “Northern Droid, looking for their design catalog and missing feedstock material?”

“Maybe, but I’m betting on Lagerford.” Sparky checked the time and stood. Their plan today was to visit the Lagerford estate in New Hampshire to add to what the twins had learned from their earlier visit. “Let’s hit the road and see if we can prove it.”

Tilting his head toward the athletic bag with the gun, Sparky asked, “Should we bring the persuader?”

“No.” The older twin shook his head. “If we were stopped, you’d be snagged for carrying without a permit, and I’d have to explain why I don’t exist in any database in this timeline. Lagerford would become the least of our worries.”

“Probably for the best.” Sparky opened the pantry and stowed the bag. “I’ve never even fired it. Have you?”

“Not yet.”

“Speaking of legal messes,” Sparky continued as he led the way out to the garage, “did you hear how much our younger brother’s lawyer is costing?”

“The one to fight the casino? Better him than me.”

The cold attitude didn’t register with Sparky, but pragmatic concerns did. “When he’s dealing with that stuff, he isn’t helping us.”

Ignoring the issue, the older twin pointed to the exercise equipment in the bay next to the car. “There are mountain trails that go near Lagerford’s house. No one pays attention to people running trails. Let’s grab workout gear to bring with us.”

Though it was a great idea, Sparky hesitated because the plan would create extra laundry for him. Despite his misgivings, he gathered clothes into duplicate piles, his annoyance ebbing enough that he even topped off both piles with clean towels.
