Inexplicably, we do not. The narrator goes on to demand:

Why isn’t the pioneer of perforation chiseled into the façades of libraries, along with Locke, Franklin, and the standard bunch of French Encyclopedists? They would have loved him!

Not everyone shares this enthusiasm: some Orthodox Jews refuse to tear toilet-paper along its perforations on the Sabbath, opting to use a foot or elbow to do the tearing instead.

Anyway, the perforated roll was to usher in a new era of toilet-driven consumerism. In 1880s Philadelphia, the Scotts led the market; in London at around the same time, WJ Alcock started selling rolls under the Bronco brand (Bronco remained the dominant brand until the 1950s, and many Britons still can’t hear the name without emitting an involuntary whimper).

This was the period during which the monsters – or, perhaps, the dinosaurs – of the industry established themselves.
