The Other 23 Hours and 57 Minutes

(what do we do all day)

“The question isn’t ‘what are we going to do,’ the question is ‘what aren’t we going to do?’”

—FERRIS BUELLER

This is just about Ari’s favorite line in a movie. While you are reading this, Ari is five minutes or less from being ready to go and do just about anything. I could call him right now, and ask, “You want to go to Best Buy?” Regardless of what he is doing, his answer will be, “Give me five minutes.” Flyers game? Five minutes. Ocean City, New Jersey? Five minutes. Late-night snack in Chinatown? Five minutes. He will go to the Cherry Hill Mall or Japan or help me cut new trim for the kitchen. When? In just five minutes. Bookstore? Are you kidding—he’s already there. On a whim, he will take the train with me to New York City or DC or go to Walmart to look at blue jeans. Dig a hole in the yard? No problem. He’s ready to go on almost no notice. He also always enjoys whatever we do. Dad says Ari is “game.” As in, he’s game for anything. I cannot ever recall hearing him complain about anything, or declining any opportunity to go anywhere, ever. He never wears down. In December 1994, after I was done with law school finals, I drove down to South Carolina to pick him up from college for Christmas and we stopped in Washington, DC, on the drive back. Together, we toured the FBI; visited the Arlington National Cemetery, the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, Ford’s Theatre, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Geographic Museum, the National Museum of the United States Navy, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Zoological Park, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; and we toured the Pentagon, where we shook hands with a Medal of Honor recipient. In thirty-six hours. We both have a perfectly foudroyant recollection of the tiniest features of our traveling time together on this, our first foray into the world alone. We have been traveling together, and often, since. When you see us in Pamplona, rest assured, we’re on our way somewhere, or five minutes from it at most.
