Traditionally, guests don’t need an invitation to attend a name day party: those who celebrate must be prepared to serve food and drink to anyone who honors them by stopping by to visit and offer their best wishes. Many name days are associated with specific foods. For example, on St. Nicolas Day, the day of the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, fish is the traditional food on the table.

Name days are often celebrated in a more elaborate and stylish way, with many more guests, gifts, and best wishes than birthdays. The attention Bulgarians pay to marking and celebrating name days shows the importance of one’s name and the honor attached to it. Though younger people may prefer to get together in a bar or a restaurant, the food, music, and celebration will be marked by the traditions associated with the patron saint of the day.
