Chapter Eleven

Introducing the 8 ½ x 11—

an effective way to

raise the consciousness

In May of 2002, I embarked on a new chapter of my career as the CEO of Hematology-Oncology Associates of Central New York (HOA). This practice is the largest and most prestigious and comprehensive privately owned cancer practice in the region. As I write this book, it is comprised of 16 physicians and about 240 employees. The practice has an incredible reputation for excellence and has won numerous awards for such. This reputation originated with the outstanding physicians who established the practice and has continued with all physicians who have joined the family of Medical and Radiation Oncologists and Hematologists.

When I arrived, the practice operated efficiently and had implemented many strategic initiatives that could carry it successfully into the future. The employees were bright, skilled and devoted to patient care. There had been some tumultuous turnover prior to my arrival and when I started my new job, I spent most of my time listening. I recognized the practice and employees were ready to move on and heal from the past.

I had a month off between this job and my previous position as a VP of two local hospitals, and I too, was in a good place to move on and heal from the exposure to one hospital’s bankruptcy and the management and operational nightmare that ensued subsequent to significant financial challenges. During that time off, I contemplated my new role with the Hem-Onc group and meditated on what I could bring to that practice. Actually, I didn’t understand meditation at that time and I didn’t know that I was doing it—I thought meditation only occurred when your mind stopped and no thoughts entered while your legs were wrapped around the back of your neck!

The familiar voice that always speaks to me was as evident and clear as ever. I kept hearing the words, “Self-Mastery . . . Self-Mastery . . . Self-Mastery.” At first, I wasn’t sure what that meant, but as the months and years progressed, I became very sure that this message would be one that I’d share with anybody who would listen, for the rest of my life. I am as equally committed to my own self-mastery journey as I am in sharing the message of self-mastery to those ears that are interested in listening and have the ability to hear. The Universe has a way of sending people to where they can make a difference. At some level of consciousness, people have a way of seeking those individuals that can assist them in whatever journey they desire, self-mastery included.

The staff was and still is, incredible. They are compassionate and sensitive to human frailty. Their vocation is working with cancer patients. Amidst the fear and suffering is great love and hope. When I got to HOA I knew I was in the right place. My interesting and unique career path became very clear to me and all the zigs and zags and choices I made seemed to migrate into clear view.
