The Store Manager

The store manager is an amiable and good-natured man. He is hard working and no fool, but he has a fatal flaw. He is deferential to authority, even poor authority, and thinks that ultimately, it is his job to carry out the decisions of his boss. While he will have his say and give a view early on in a conversation, if he thinks that his opinion is not wanted he desists straight away.

On these occasions he doesn’t persevere and make it his job to get the sales director to hear him. He conserves his energy, thinking that it will be better to do what the sales director wants, rather than risk an argument with his boss. It is this lack of resolve that undermines him, leaving him unable to draw the line or build influence with his manager. While it is true that he cannot easily refuse to implement a decision made by someone with more seniority than him without suffering some consequences, it is also true that failing to stand up for what he believes to be right won’t do him any good either.

His style of opting out of contentious discussions early on leaves him with few options when working with a boss who spends most of his time covering his back with his board-level peers, and who doesn’t want, as he would see it, to waste time he hasn’t got discussing issues with his store managers. The store manager fails to find a balance that enables him to put his point across and stand by his own values sufficiently that he can choose to defer to the will of his boss should his argument prove ineffective. Instead he simply gives in, early and without a fight.
