When your hormones function properly, they help your body achieve homeostasis—they keep your body stable, its interval environment in balance, regardless of external conditions. Any deviation in your hormonal equilibrium can result in system-wide disruptions. That’s why hormonal get-fit-quick schemes—performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and supplements that contain precursors (substances that your body converts into hormones)—are especially dangerous. See the sidebar, “Gaming the system,” for a rundown on hormonal misbehavior and its side effects.

BEGINNER’S GUIDELINE

Since running is a mostly catabolic exercise (it breaks muscle down) and resistance training is an anabolic activity (it releases hormones that build muscle and speed recovery), it’s important to incorporate some resistance work at the outset of your training program.
