Chapter 6
Grocery Shopping 101
I was full of trepidation as we walked into the dark back storeroom of the grocery. I knew Jeneen and her husband needed supplies, but the hair standing on the back of my neck said this was a bad plan. As the door closed and cut off the light, the only illumination came from the front windows as it filtered through the two round ones in a set of swinging double doors. These doors allowed access to the main floor. The electricity had only been off for a few hours, but without air moving inside the building, we could immediately smell the odors of ripeness and meat that would be turning soon.
Handing the brown paper bag to Jeneen, I unsheathed the knife from behind my back and held it in my right hand, point up like a torch. I held it with the sharp edge up in case we were confronted. With my left hand I reached back and grabbed Jeneenâs wrist, dragging her along as I headed for the bit of light coming through those doors some thirty feet away.
âWhoa Roy!â she tried to dislodge my grasp. âWhatâs your hurry? There could be stuff we need back here.â I kept my pace steady as I spoke in low tones without looking back at her.
âWe need to keep moving and I donât want to get caught back here. There are other people in here and I donât hear anything. We need to get out where we can see whatâs going on.â She stopped resisting after that and let me tow her along as I continued forward.
As the knuckles of my right hand made contact with the metal doors and the knife they held made a âclinkâ when the tip touched the metal, I heard a male voice from somewhere in the dark behind us saying âGrab her!â At that instant I was clocked from behind with something that hurt like a bitch! I think they were aiming for my head, but made connection mostly with the back of my neck and the space between my shoulders. I felt Jeneen as she was ripped away from me and I was propelled forward into the doors by the poorly-placed strike. My face and chest smacked squarely against the doors as they gave way and I fell forward. The knife left my hand and flew out in front of me somewhere as I fell forward under my own weight. My last thought before hitting the floor was âYou swing like a girl!â
I didnât pass out, but I was seeing stars. I was unable to focus in the dim light of the store as I heard Jeneen scream from the back of the darkened storeroom. Fighting through the fog, I had just started rolling myself over when I heard a male voice scream in agony.
âShit John! That bitch cut me bad! Look at the blood!â
Another voice that must have been John said, âEasy bitch. We didnât mean nothinâ. See? Weâre leaving. Come on Greg.
