The drive home was uneventful, my two passengers sleeping soundly. Tonibler, worn out from sheer excitement, slept with his head on Dot’s lap while Dot snored softly, half-sozzled from her introduction to the national drink of ouzo.

Chapter 16

Old Friends Reunite

Dropping Tonibler off with Blerta before returning home with Vi’s visitor, the Kosovan woman was moved to tears when her son recounted that not only had I treated him to a pair of swim shorts and armbands, I had given him his first swimming lesson.

“I can swim, Mama,” he declared, bouncing up and down on the spot with excitement.

“Just don’t think about going in without your armbands until you’ve had some more practise,” I said.

“I won’t,” he promised.

“Tonibler took to it like a duck to water,” I said to Blerta.

“That’s an idiom,” Tonibler proudly announced.

Embracing her son, Blerta dropped kisses on the top of his head. As she thanked me profusely for taking Tonibler out for the afternoon, I couldn’t help commenting on how much her English had come along since we first met.

“Tonibler is teach me,” Blerta revealed.

Not only was Tonibler my star pupil, he was exhibiting excellent skills as a language teacher.

“He must come along with us next time we go to the beach,” I invited. “Tonibler is delightful company.”

“I feel bad. It is the school holiday but Blat and I must work.”

“Terrible bad form of Norman not welcoming the boy while you clean. I will have words next time I see him,” I promised, before driving away.

Pulling up at the house, I rapped on the door to the apothiki, Dot squirming with excitement beside me at the prospect of being reunited with her dear old friend.

“That’s odd, my mother isn’t answering yet her bicycle is here.”

“’Appen Vi’s having one of them afternoon siesta things. I remember her saying that wife of yours is quite partial to them.”

“It’s the Greek way,” I said, not wanting Dot to get the ridiculous idea that Marigold was lazy.

“Dot. Up here.”

Doing her best fishwife impression, Violet Burke screeched down from my upstairs balcony, solving the conundrum of where she had got to. So much for the sanctity of siesta time.

“Vi. I’m here, Vi,” Dot yelled back.

Leaving me to struggle upstairs with her luggage, Dot practically skipped ahead, colliding with my mother at the top of the stairs. I have to say, for someone with enormously bloated ankles, Vi had made quick work of the distance from the balcony to the door. Considering my mother isn’t one to be demonstrably affectionate as a rule, I was surprised to see the two women locked in a firm embrace, Dot almost engulfed by the much larger figure of Violet Burke.

“Vi, it’s been forever.”

“Dot, it’s that good to see you.”

As the two women reunited, Marigold dragged me through to the kitchen, complaining I was late back.

“I expected you back ages ago, Victor. I’ve been stuck here for hours with your mother. Once she’d climbed the stairs, she didn’t think her feet would make it back down again.”

“I told you that you should have come to the airport with me.
