Chapter fifteen

Future Jack Rhodes led me to the ship’s bridge. Just getting there took quite some time as the ship was beyond massive. After a while, I grew annoyed with all the walking and said, “Doesn’t this ship have any transportation? I saw some bots earlier, so you must have some vehicles somewhere.”

“That is true,” the voice said. “But, as you can see, this ship does not have a crew so we do not have any use for those vehicles.”

“Well, you do now. So, why don’t you send one over? I’m sure you can control them remotely.”

“Very well, Jack. I thought you had more stamina than this.”

“Stop pissing me off and get me a damn vehicle.”

The voice chuckled. “One is en route as we speak.”

“Good. Speaking of a crew, what’s the deal with all those aliens in the tubes that I saw.”

“All in good time, Jack,” the voice said. “I assure you, it’s nothing nefarious.”

“Really? Because it sure looked nefarious to me.”

“It really isn’t.”

“Are they cryo-chambers?”

“They are not frozen, as your term suggests, but it is something similar to that. I can give you a more thorough explanation at another time.”

I didn’t like how vague the explanation was, but I let it go. Before long a kind of air car showed up, hovering just a few feet off the ground. I climbed in and it took off, presumably taking me to the bridge. It wasn’t a short trip either, and I was a little pissed that this thing, future me or whatever it was, expected me to walk the entire way. That said, things could have been worse. I could’ve been in a situation where I had to fight my way off this behemoth, and who knows how that would’ve ended. So, I kept my guard up but decided to reserve judgment and see how this played out.

I was thankful that the voice didn’t talk too much during the trip, and I paid close attention to my surroundings. I saw more of those bots along the way, and many entrances to unknown areas of the ship. I did have a lot of questions about this ship. Why build something this size if you didn’t have a crew? I figured that was probably not always the case. Someone built this ship and it probably wasn’t future me. And if everything future me said was true, then this ship had a temporal engine, whatever that was. But if the temporal engine allowed future me’s consciousness to travel back here, then who built it? It seemed like a chicken or the egg kind of question, but there had to be an answer. I had more questions, but I held off asking them, waiting instead to see what future me wanted to show me.

“This is it, Jack,” the voice said as the vehicle came to a stop. “You’ll need to go the rest of the way on foot.”

I got out of the vehicle and it glided away. “What now?”

A section of the wall opened, and the voice said, “Right this way.
