CHAPTER 33

Cool air and dawn’s light conspired to draw Mara out of her deep sleep. As she arose from unconsciousness, she became aware of being constrained, tied down, and she jerked awake with a loud clang when her armored arm struck one of the metal fittings on the side of the carriage bench. The horses stirred and flapped their lips, releasing a thin fog into the morning air. It wasn’t until then that she remembered where she was.

“Good morning,” Darius said. He sat on a large rock several feet from the side of the carriage, hovering over another smaller rock that glowed red. On top of it sat a small frying pan and a cylinder with a noticeable spout on it.

Mara inhaled the air and knew instantly it was a coffeepot.

“I’m told you enjoy coffee.”

“You were told correctly, but by whom?” Mara lifted herself up, managed to get her armored legs planted on the floorboards steadily enough to step off the carriage and to make her way to the seer’s improvised campsite.

Darius filled a cup and handed it to her as she sat on another stone across from him. “How did you heat up this rock so much?”

Darius plucked a tiny metal disk attached magnetically to the inside left corner of his breastplate and held it up. “A light energy multiplier. Place it on the rock, and, a few moments later, the power of the sun heats it up.”

“Something you brought from the moon, I take it?” she asked. “How will you explain it to Mutton?”

“I heated the stone after he left to scout out the trail to the opening of the tunnels. If he returns before it cools, I’ll tell him that I warmed it with a campfire that consumed the wood.” He lifted the round device to his breastplate, where it snapped back into place with a click, then handed her a plate with a thick slice of meat and a piece of toast.

She took the plate and said, “He won’t believe your cover story. No ashes are around the stone.” Darius didn’t provide utensils, so she grabbed the meat with her fingers and took a bite.

Darius shrugged, looked unconcerned. “Assuming we make it through the tunnels to the summit, what are your intentions?”

“Why wouldn’t we make it?” Mara asked.

“We could get lost. Or perhaps captured by watchers guarding the exit. We’re not even sure the tunnels reach the summit,” he said. “But you deflected my question with one of your own without answering. What do you plan to do once you get to the king? Will you depose him? Kill him?”

“I’m not interested in deposing or killing anyone. Basically I have two goals. First, disrupt the king and his forces enough to ensure Sam and Ping aren’t killed, and then the valley’s troops can take the castle. If they want to depose or to kill the king, that is their business. Second, I want to find the Chronicle of Consequence, and then I’m out of here.”

“How do you propose to do that? Your abilities are inoperable on the mountain.
