Chapter 14

Lir

I feel renewed. Kylie is giving me a second chance to show I’m not an asshole. And I’m not going to waste it. It’s vitally important to me that she knows I am worthy. I am a good male. I’ve been so focused on my own problems, my mission, and my mistakes, I didn’t spare a thought for Kylie other than how she could make me feel good. But I’m not going to think about that anymore.

I’ve behaved despicably. From now on, Kylie is safe from me. Until I load her and her friends onto her ship and wave them goodbye, she is mine to protect, including from myself. When she’s gone, I will rescue Orix. I have plenty of time. Seeing my shovel in action, I know it’s worth every penny I paid for it. Orix is as good as free already.

For now, we’re both exhausted and still filthy. We need a place to rest for a while before we make our plans to rescue Kylie’s friends, wherever they are. I hope, if they ran into trouble like Kylie did, they met better males than me.

I set up my tent by the stream while Kylie stretches her stiff muscles. Every time I look at her face and see the bruises and small cuts, my blood boils, but I stave off my Wrath easily enough. I’m too exhausted to call on it again so soon after ripping apart my bindings and then running for miles through the forest.

“Sleep for a while,” I say gruffly when the tent is ready. “I will hunt for some fresh meat for when you wake.”

She grins at me, a dimple winking in her cheek I never noticed before. Probably because she never meant any of her previous smiles. I truly am a supreme asshole.

“You don’t have to treat me like I’m a princess.”

“I’m not,” I protest quickly. I turn away to grab the lumos sword from my pack. I’m beyond relieved that the Kinto gangsters didn’t search the pack in the cellar; it would have been a blow to lose such a weapon. That I’m now going to use to chop the head off some small prey animal.

Kylie doesn’t say anything further and crawls into the tent. Her sigh when she hits the blanket makes my chest tighten with longing, but I suppress that feeling ruthlessly.

“I’ll be nearby,” I promise. “If you need me, scream and I will come.”

Her shadow on the tent wall nods before she reclines again.

I leave hastily. The temptation to crawl in there with her is almost too strong to resist. In fact, I don’t know if I can resist it.

Tugging at my hair, I tell myself that as long as she doesn’t know about my wants, it’s okay to feel them. Privately.

I walk into the forest just far enough away the tent is a blur, and then I stop, leaning my forearm against a tree and untying my trousers. If I’m going to keep my hands off Kylie, I need to relieve some tension first.
