She was alone.

Steele was gone.

Max shivered as she looked into the trees the way he’d disappeared. The bushes swayed slightly with the movement and she tracked it until it stopped, her brain frozen and not processing anything.

He had… No. She shook her head, blinking absently. No, he absolutely had not had fangs. Impossible. He was a special forces soldier. That was all. Which was why he’d been able to do what he did. Kill that guy with his bare hands.

So why had he been so cold back at the warehouse, the little voice niggled in the back of her mind. Once that thought crowded into her brain, others followed. Like the man that had been murdered in the cage opposite. She’d been shying away from connecting the dots. The way they’d been treated, the things she’d seen…

Unbidden, a whimper escaped her lips. Somehow in the middle of this nightmare she’d held it together, but only because of him. He’d made her feel safe, both back in the warehouse and out here in the forest. On her own, she’d have been a gibbering wreck, but being with him… his reassuring presence had kept her calm. He’d seemed to know exactly what he was doing, even though the situation had gone from weird to seriously fucked in the blink of an eye.

A low moan bubbled up in her throat as she sat there in the dirt and wrapped her arms around herself. This was all so wrong she didn’t know where to start. Rubbing her hands over her arms, the memory of being held in Steele’s embrace assaulted her. She thought of his strength as he held her against him.

And he was a monster… they were all monsters.

The one in the cage that had wanted the guards to put her with him until Steele had intervened. The one he’d killed in the clearing. She sucked a hard breath in as she realized the man the blood on the tree belonged to had to be another one of them.

V..V.. Va…

No. She shook her head, not ready to go there even mentally.

She might not know what to call them, but she did know one thing. Steele had saved her life. Twice. If she’d ended up with that… creature from the warehouse, her blood would be on a tree somewhere.

He’d warned her he was dangerous, that he wasn’t what she thought he was… he was a monster like the others.

But he’d killed another monster for her.

“Fuck!” she hissed to herself.

He wasn’t a monster, though. He was a man. She’d seen real emotions in his eyes when he looked at her, not the greedy deadness of the man back in the cages. He’d just scared her. The way he’d looked at her, like he was sizing her up as if she was a side of beef. A meal he was planning on devouring. Literally.

Steele had looked at her with an entirely different sort of hunger. He’d looked at her and the need and longing, the heated desire, in his eyes had taken her breath away.
