Insanity. Pure insanity. There was no way the Coalition had just…folded and the core worlds had abandoned humanity. Evie refused to believe it. Sure, an invading force would be disruptive, and in the case of the Athru, downright catastrophic. But that didn’t mean they could tear apart two thousand years of cooperation, integration, and sharing, did it? What about all the blended families all over the Coalition? What about the humans who lived on Yax-Inax and Untu and a hundred other non-native worlds? Had they been excised, like a broken power rod? And what of all the species living on Earth and other human worlds? Had the Athru left them to live, or was that part of the reason the other planets no longer wanted to help them—their people had been slaughtered for the crime of being close to humans?

She stopped in the hall and leaned up against the cool bulkhead, closing her eyes. People passed, but no one was stupid enough to stop and ask her what was wrong. Not that she could have told them if she wanted to.

“Captain?” Shit. She spoke too soon. Evie plastered a smile on her face and turned to see…no one. The corridor was empty, despite the fact she’d seen members of the crew walking around before.

This was not happening, she was not going to fall into these hallucinations again, not after all the trouble she’d gone to rid herself of them. And this time Sesster wasn’t around to help in the event she got into trouble. Not that it was going to happen anyway.

“Seems you’ve forgotten someone.” The voice came from all around her and Evie spun again, sure she would catch the culprit. But it was just her.

“What the fuck,” she whispered. Her heart pounded in her chest as she jerked her head left and right, trying to find the owner of the voice. She’d heard it before…somewhere. It was a woman’s voice.

“You’ve definitely heard it before, only then things were different. Then you were complete.”

The voice had a playfulness to it; someone was toying with her. “Just tell me what you want,” she yelled, furious she didn’t know who this person was or what they wanted. Or if they were even real.

“I’m real alright,” they said. “As real as you.”

“Are you a mind reader now?” Evie asked. “Why don’t you show your face? Or are you too much of a coward to face me in person?” Her anxiety had been ratcheted up to eleven; was she
