Fortunately, Alfred had built our home with two bathrooms, complete with showers. The men showered in one bathroom, I showered in the other, and we met again outside to begin working in less than an hour. None of us noticed that Clint had disappeared on his bike. We were all stationed at our work duties. I was even more distracted when a truck drove up in the drive and Ron and Faith spilled out with the children.
âI see you have company for lunch,â Ron said, engulfing me in a hug. âThatâs fine, because Faith and I planned to barbecue for you today. She even made that potato salad with mustard and brown sugar dressing that you love, Mom.â
When I hugged Faith, I wanted only her for a daughter-in-law. All thoughts of Lynette Clarissa Greeneâs outward beauty had been banished, swept away by the realization that under her good looks, Lynette was heartless and unbelievably evil. Amazingly, even my grudge against Faith for having replaced Irene Johnson in my sonâs life seemed to be gone. I was thrilled to claim Faith as a family member. Why, what if Ron and Irene had married and then Donna had taken them to Georgia with her? Distance would have swallowed up all my family members and separated me from my grandsons. Perhaps God knew what He was doing after all, working away with that master plan of His. Perhaps when God sets the lasso and pens up moments of time, our job is to trust whatever winds up in the corral with us.
To their credit, Nat and Jared continued working until the barbecued brisket and chicken were ready and the outside picnic table was decked with gold-colored potato salad, sliced onions and pickles, and Ronâs secret recipe beans. We clasped hands as Ronâs deep voice led us in prayer.
As we began filling our plates, I realized that Clint was missing.
Jared ran to look for him. With worried face, he returned and explained, âHeâs gone, and so is his bike. Do you think he went off to kill himself, Miss Rice?â
âWhat!?â Ron and Faith exclaimed.
âHeâs morose about losing his girlfriend, but I imagine heâs just gone after some more of his things.â
âWait ⦠heâs staying here?â Ron asked.
âWe all are,â Jared replied cheerfully. âNat lost his pad in San Antonio, and I got kicked out of the childrenâs home for killing someone I didnât kill, and Clint was going to do himself in over his girlfriend, who Mike thinks is a murderer.â
Faith gasped, and I noticed for the first time that she lacked her usual hearty appetite. Uneaten food lined her plate, and she had pushed the plate away after feeding some of her leftovers to Alex and Ryan.
âMom, explain,â Ron ordered. âNow whose business are you mixed up in?â He looked at Nat suspiciously, and revelation washed across his face. âHey! I saw you, running down the street with a bunch of thugs chasing you. Someone better explain.â
âYour mother saved my life, and then she got me a job at the newspaper in town.
