Chapter Eight

The music was loud, pounding against him and he was pounding against the clay, sweating even though he was naked. White rage poured from him, not directed, just drawn by the music and by the way the clay refused to become. He bashed and tore at the clay, letting the music drive him, trusting in the process. At the end of wildness was order.

Banging joined the music, counterpoint to it.

“Go away! Leave me alone!” He was working.

The knocking continued, but he ignored it.

Suddenly there was a voice right behind him, calling his name. “Toby!”

“What? Can’t you fucking see I’m working?” He spun around, lost in…everything.

“Whoa.” Christian held his arms out in a placating gesture. “It’s me. It’s Christian. You didn’t answer and with all that’s been going on, I was worried.”

“Oh. Oh. Sorry. Sorry. I was… Lost.”

“I get that. Totally.”

“Yeah. Yeah. It’s…” Necessary.

“Kiddo, your hands are bleeding.” Christian sounded concerned.

Toby waved it off. “I’m fine.”

“I don’t think you are. If the clay gets in there, you could get an infection.” Christian looked like he was about to get all soldier on him.

Toby kissed Christian’s cheek. “Fine. Working. Art. Passion. All that stuff.”

“You need to see to your hands, though.” Christian frowned and pulled out his phone. “I should call Damon.”

“I’ll do it, later.” He gently, but firmly, pushed Christian out of the studio, turned up the music and got back to work.

He had no clue how long he’d been at it, no idea at all, when he heard his name from right behind him again. This time it was Damon’s voice.

God damn it! “The next person that scares me is going to get a spanking!”

Damon chuckled. “Well, baby, if you answered the door…”

He turned, but before he could say anything else, Damon made a noise. “Toby! Your hands.”

“What? I’m working!”

“You’re bleeding.” Damon took his hands in a gentle hold.

“Uh-huh. Did Christian call you?”

“Yep. He said you wouldn’t let him help you with your injuries.”

“I’m working. He worries.” And now he was exhausted and beginning to hurt.

“That’s because he’s a good friend.” Damon looked past him. “Do you need to cover that or something before we take care of you?”

“I… Is it worth anything?”

“What do you mean, baby? Won’t the clay get hard and unmalleable?”

“But the work. How does it make you feel?” That was important.

Damon looked at it and frowned. “It’s a very angry piece, baby. Is that how you’re feeling?”

“It’s what is feeling me.”

“I don’t get what you mean,” Damon admitted.

“I just needed to let go, to let myself feel, and that’s what happened. I needed to hurt.”

“You need a hug.” Damon gave it to him, despite the fact that he was covered in clay. “It’s a powerful piece, but not one I want in our home.”

“I’m tired.” All of a sudden his body felt like it was on fire.

“Then let’s hit the shower.” Damon was already leading him there.

Toby shook his head. “Take me home.” Now that he was coming down, he didn’t want to be near the piece.
