In food circles, hormones, pesticides, and genetically modified crops have become as feared as the boogeyman, linked to a litany of diseases that, if I were to list them, might harsh your beer buzz.

In response, supermarkets and restaurants have been awash in grub touting words like all natural, organic, and green, adjectives that seem odd when applied to beer. “Foods like organic yogurt and granola are meant to be healthy, but beer is a guilty pleasure,” says Mike Cadoux, a representative for Portland, Maine’s Peak Organic, where his brother Jon is brewmaster. “How is organic beer supposed to be good for you?”
