Chapter 18

Simon refilled Connor’s cup and then his own. He took notice that the bottle was half empty. It had been a while since he’d drunk this much. There hadn’t been a problem in need of this much whiskey until now. So when Connor called him from their office, he knew it was serious. Connor and Darcie had barely been home a day and a half. It was baffling how things could go so wrong so fast.

The cousins sat for an hour at Simon’s desk, running through options, but all they came up with were empty cups. So they changed the subject.

“I saw Sondra. She said you two are happy.”

“You know, I didn’t think I was capable of love anymore. After Sarah, I didn’t want it. But this is different.” He threw back a drink and hissed as he stared across the dimly lit office at nothing in particular. “Sondra thinks it’s all just sex. But only because she won’t admit to herself that she loves me.” He poured himself a refill and took a long sip of the comforting liquid while thinking about their fight and how they’d made up. “It’s another matter entirely when you’re inside the woman you love. Who knew?”

Connor grinned and picked up his drink. Finally, at least someone had a problem that could actually be resolved. “So what are you going to do about it?”

“Don’t know.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I tried every trick I know.”

“The tricks you know are ones that only work on those doxies you’ve been dating.”

“Be fair now. They weren’t all doxies.”

Connor raised one eyebrow.

Simon took another drink and huffed. “Fine. You’re right.”

Connor had an idea and headed to his own office next door. “Here. I’ve the number of a—” He stumbled through his office doorway and tripped face flat on the floor. “Fuck me.”

Simon tried to help Connor stand, but he shoved him away. After all, he was an O’Brian, and they could hold their drink. Usually. His hand shook on the corner of the desk as he hoisted himself up. That floor looked so inviting, though. Since his cousin was the only one around, he decided it was a fine idea to rest awhile on the cool tile. Besides, he could think better with a cool head. So he laid his cheek against the floor and passed out.

Seeing that Connor wasn’t going anywhere, Simon walked to the back to relieve himself and make a call. Unfortunately, they were going to require help for more reasons than one.
