Closing the door behind him, Amos let his gaze drift around the open-concept lower level. Graceâs nutmeg scent hung in the air. Everything looked new, from the paint on the walls to the granite countertops in the kitchen, stainless steel appliances, and even the furniture. It was obvious Grace had wanted to start all over again after her divorce.
He didnât expect to run into the soldier sheâd described. All the same, he would just as soon not take chancesââespecially if Grace was embroiled in spiritual warfare. What kind of warrior would he be if he didnât at least try to protect her, using the only weapon he knew worked?
Pulling the crucifix pendant out from under his white T-shirt, he held it up in front of him as he began making a sweep of her home. With windows in only the front and back walls, shadows pooled here and there, keeping him alert. He searched the front closet and the pantry in the kitchen, pausing to appreciate how neatly Grace stored her cans and boxes. The artwork on the stairs caught his eye as he started up them, murmuring his version of the lines he had once read in a chilling novel.
âUnholy spirit, I demand, in the name of Jesus Christ, that you leave this place and cease to torment Grace Garrett, as she is Godâs own forever.â
Colder air wafted over him as he climbed the stairs. Perhaps it was just a change in temperature, though heat tended to rise, so that made no sense. The hairs on his forearm prickled. He spoke louder. âIn the name of Jesus Christ, I demand, unholy spirit, that you leave this place and cease to torment Grace Garrett, as she is Godâs own forever.â
She is almost mine.
Amos froze. The words were only in his head, but they sounded as clear as if someone had whispered them directly into his ear. âNever.â He spun around and started down the stairs again, chasing the chill he had sensed earlier. âGet out, in the name of Jesus Christ!â
Whipping up his energy, Amos bore down on the entity, holding his crucifix before him. If his men on the Team saw this, they would share knowing looks, he was sure. They all thought him half-crazy anyway. âGrace Garrett will never be yours, for she is Godâs own forever. As God is for her, nothing can ever be against her, so it is written. Now begone!â He ended up yelling the words, and every inch of his skin ridged with goosebumps.
Breathing fast, he listened, sensing the atmosphere for the least suggestion of hostility. The air seemed undisturbed, of consistent temperature. He cast his eyes about, curious to note that the shadows pooling in the corners of the room seemed to have lifted. Of course, the sun might have skated out from behind a cloud outside. Modern-day reasoning suggested he had done nothing but fool himself, but intuition whispered that God had worked through him to unfurl a wing of protection over her.
