âSo what do you think?â says Marsh. âDid he seem real? Was he convincing? Did he seem just like you?â
Thereâs a lot of whispering and chattering. Joyce Dunn from the year below us puts her hand up.
âYes?â says Marsh.
âHe did seem a bit like us, but as well he seemed like . . . dead weird or something.â
âDead weird?â
âAye. Like he wasnât all there.â
Thereâs lots of sniggering.
âAye,â says somebody else. âLike you couldnât work out if he was really clever or really thick.â
âI knew!â shouts Jack Frith.
âKnew what?â says Marsh.
âKnew he was a robot. I said to me sister when I went home. Thereâs a new kid in school and heâs a robot.â
âI said he was an alien!â says somebody else. âHeâs come from Planet Zog, I said.â
âAye. I said the same and all. Stands to reason, I said.â
âAnd,â says Marsh, âdid you like having him here? Did you enjoy your time with him?â
âAye!â
âYes!â
âIt was a good laugh!â
âItâs been dead interesting.â
âThatâs excellent. So you felt that he fitted in, in his own . . . dead weird way.â
âAye, well, thereâs plenty weirdos here anyway!â
Marsh laughs. He leans toward us and lowers his voice as if heâs sharing a great secret.
âOne day, children,â he says, âthere will be a perfect George. A George will walk among you who is so perfectly made, so . . . human, that nobody will realize that it is a George at all. There will be a George â or a Georgina! â who seems to be just like you.â
He watches us ponder that.
âSo that could mean,â says Sandra Miles, âthat one of us here, right now, could be a . . . George, a robot, and we wouldnât know.â
âClever girl,â says Marsh. âYou are indeed correct.â He looks at Mrs. Hoolihan.
âWhat clever children you have in your school, Mrs. Hoolihan!â
Mrs. Hoolihan quivers with delight, of course.
âOh, yes, we have, Mr. Marsh!â she squeaks.
âIndeed, any single one of us,â says Marsh, âmight be a George, a robot.â
âIâm not,â mutters Billy.
âMaybe I am one myself!â says Marsh. âMaybe your principal is! Maybe the room is filled with creatures who seem to be human but are not.â
I look at Maxie.
âIâm not a robot, mate,â he grunts.
âMe neither,â I say.
âBut I doubt it,â says Marsh. âWe at New Life Corporation are at the true cutting edge. No one else has come up with a way of creating the perfect-seeming human.â
He steps back to George. He puts his arm around Georgeâs shoulder again.
âOur George is the star. Our George is a multimillion-pound project.â
âMultimillion-pound project, children!â gasps Mrs. Hoolihan.
âYes,â says Marsh. âAnd he is the first of a brand-new line.â
âA brand-new line!â
Marsh cups Georgeâs chin in his hand. George, of course, makes no response. He gazes out at us all with empty eyes.
Mrs. Imani speaks.
âDid George like it?â she says.
