How to Analyze the Spellings

Before going further, think once more about the features that you will look for in each word to place it in a developmental phase. Note that for veteran teachers who may have previously used more technical spelling labels (e.g., precommunicative—transitional), we include those former labels in the following list to remind you that the phases simply have been renamed to make them more teacher-friendly. Here, we’ll revisit the phases of spelling as we reflect specifically on responses to the Monster Test and include the grade-level expectation for each spelling phase. As a final note, remember that a child who scribbles and cannot write his name is in Phase 0 (non-alphabetic), which is generally expected in preschool.
