CHAPTER 20

FISHERMAN'S WHARF

Dawn Harrison abducted, Tyler and Ethan dead. Marlow couldn't believe the absolute shitstorm that was now going down. The entire Neuromorph campus was swarming with National Security Agency people, looking into every electron that moved in the corporation's network. His own security sweep after the riot now looked pathetically incompetent in comparison to the deep forensic analysis that was currently underway. He wondered if he still had a job. What use was he now?

He thought of Harrison, the woman from the gym, the one he wanted to ask on a date, and wondered what she must be going through. He thought of Tyler and Ethan, both lying on a cold slab in the city morgue. He felt angry, he felt frustrated, but most of all he felt responsible. It was he who persuaded the two security contractors to take the job, and now they were dead and Harrison was nowhere to be found. He needed to do something, anything, to find out who did the hit and make them pay. He reached into his pocket to get his phone only to remember that the NSA agents had taken it for forensic examination. He lifted the receiver on the old handset on his desk and called the San Francisco Police Department. After a few moments of being shunted around and listening to elevator music, he finally got connected to Bill Flaherty, his old boss.

“I shouldn't be talking to you, Jeb,” Flaherty said as soon as he answered.

“Tyler and Ethan, what can you tell me?” Jeb asked.

There was a pause, followed by a long intake of breath, followed by the sound of a door closing. “Can't talk here. Meet me down by the Pier, the usual spot.”

“Okay, on my way.”
