Chapter Eleven
Kaia
I opened my eyes and grimaced from the pain that shot through my head, touching every nerve in my brain. It felt like I had been hit in the head with a hammer. Repeatedly. I raised my hands to massage my temples and was surprised to see that they were both bandaged in white gauze.
Confused, I glanced over and saw Nolan asleep on the bed next to me with his arm draped across my belly. Not wanting to wake him when he seemed so peaceful, I wiggled out from underneath his arm and scooted to the edge of the bed.
âWhere are you going?â
I jumped at the sound of Nolanâs voice and glanced over my shoulder to see him wide awake and staring at me. âWhat happened?â I asked and held my hands up for him to see the gauze.
Nolan propped himself up on the bed with his elbow. âDonât you remember?â he asked.
I turned around on the bed to face him. âIf I did, I wouldnât need to ask what happened, now would I?â I replied with a bit more sarcasm than I intended.
âWhatâs the last thing you remember?â
âI remember being with you, Brin and my mom in Brinâs room. I remember saying a spell to allow me to connect with Drycusâ memoriesâ I paused and thought about what Iâd seen. And learned. So much information now resided in my head, yet I had no idea how to use it to save my father. Or my friends.
I locked eyes with Nolan and continued, âAnd I remember everything I saw in his mind.â
âThatâs it? Thatâs all you remember?â Nolan asked as he moved to sit beside me on the edge of the bed. âYou donât remember destroying Brinâs room and attacking me?â
My eyes widened in disbelief. âWhat?â I asked, not entirely sure I had heard him correctly. âI attacked you?â
âYou didâ Nolan said. âBut you didnât know what you were doingâ he added quickly. âYour mom thinks you were reacting to the emotions you felt from Drycus.â
Fear washed over me as I lowered my head in shame. âDid I hurt anyone?â I asked and silently prayed that he wouldnât confirm that I had.
âNo.â
I exhaled deeply as relief filled my chest. But I still didnât want to look over at Nolan. Especially since I couldnât remember anything other than what Iâd seen while shifting through Drycusâ memories. âIâm sorryâ I mumbled, then sighed heavily. âItâs seems Iâm saying that a lot lately.â
âLike I said, it wasnât your faultâ Nolan replied, then paused, âDo you want to talk about what you saw?â
I thought about his question. I knew I needed to let him and everyone else know what Iâd discovered because the fact was, I now had the missing piece to the puzzle. But at that moment, I didnât want to talk about anything or see anyone. I just wanted to be held. I needed to feel loved. Just for a little while.
Shaking my head, I laid back down on the bed and scooted close to Nolan.
