Chapter 11
I woke to a door closing, but it hadnât been mine. I could hear Chase walking around in his room. I untangled myself from the sheets and got up. I shoved my feet into the boots I had left scattered by the bed, and I slipped out of my room and knocked lightly on his door. He opened it with a gruff look on his face, which instantly brightened when he saw me.
âHi, youâre up,â he said, opening the door wider for me to come in.
âJust now. I heard your door.â
He winced.âSorry about that. I didnât mean to wake you.â
I waved a hand at him.âItâs fine. I had to be ready to wake up.â I dropped down into his chair. âHow did the rest of your day go?â I asked, cringing. I might as well have asked about the weather.
âIt was fineâjust reports. Itâs almost dinner. Iâm assuming youâre hungry?â he asked, and I nodded, smiling.
âI have to remember to take the baskets back to Amelia. Before I know it, they are going to be overrunning my room.â
âDo you know anything about Damienâs broken nose?â he asked.
I looked up at him innocently.âMe? No, why would you ask?â
He sighed and flopped down on his bed.âBecause he was ranting at the infirmary about how you are a crazy, unhinged beast, and we should be rid of you immediately,â he said, rolling his head to look at me again. âSo, what happened?â
âHe tried to take something that wasnât his, so I taught him a lesson.â
The rage in Chaseâs eyes surprised me. He sat up immediately.
âWhat did he do to you?â he growled.
âI took care of it, Chase. I donât need you to protect me.â I could tell he didnât believe that, as true as it might come to be. He would never feel off the hook for taking care of me.
âYes, I do. We just pulled you out of a prison. Just because you might be coming into some powers doesnât mean you know how to protect yourself. Iâm here to take care of you. I failed before. Iâm not going to again.â
I could see him spiraling into a prison of his own making. How long had he lived there? Living with the guilt of not being able to protect me? I got up and walked over to his bed. I sat down next to him and put my arms around him, setting my head on his shoulder. Slowly, ever so slowly, he wrapped his arms around me. I could feel him take in a big breath, fluttering my hair. He squeezed me tight.
âItâs not your fault, Chase. None of this was ever your fault.â
As he shook, I held him tighter, my heart gradually thawing. Even with our rocky start here, I could now tellâfeelâthat I could trust him.
âI should have been there. I should have protected you from her,â he said softly. âWe all knew how she was. The moment I heard about your father, I should have raced to you.â
I pulled back and looked him in the eye.
