Edie feasted on the partridge Charlot and Swift Deer had brought to the camp. Grease ran along her fingers as she continued to bite into the juicy breast. The sun was already sinking low behind the tree line. Night was coming too fast, and Thunder Bear still hadn’t departed.

Not only did her belly sing with joy from the delicious treat, her heart skipped a few beats. Maybe they could spend some time together alone before Thunder Bear left. Perhaps this was why he’d come to their camp.

There’d been so many chores that had kept her busy ever since the summer, from the ricing season to drying berries. Much had to be done before winter arrived to ensure their bellies remained full during the cold season. She’d even learned how to make pemmican, the dried meat easy for storage and a quick meal for a harsh winter day if there was no fresh deer or elk to eat.

During her evening chores, Thunder Bear’s gaze bore into Edie’s backside, and her hands shook. The women took notice and giggled, too. She did her best to brush off the light teasing.

Once she was finished cleaning up, her heart seemed to grow bigger, readying to burst through her ribs because Thunder Bear had smoked a pipe with her father and retired to the lodge. How was she supposed to sleep with him lying in a bed of robes where Charlot had slept last night?

She glanced around at those who hadn’t retired meandering to the lodge. Tightening the blanket around her shoulders, she dipped her head and shuffled through the opening of the wigwam to Thunder Bear feeding more wood to the burning cooking fire.

Edie’s gaze zeroed in on the spot where she’d slept last night, safely at the heads of her parents. She wouldn’t move her robes again. They’d stay put in their usual spot. To move them would insult Thunder Bear, since seeking the safety of her parents was a woman’s way to deter a potential suitor. Yet, what if he came to her while Woman of the Sky and Walks with a Limp slept?

If she turned him away, he might mistake her fear for rejection. Somehow, she had to make him understand the commitment she’d be undertaking.

Wait, she was getting ahead of herself. He might simply want to spend the night before he left. Blood flooded her toes and fingers. She plopped down at the warming fire full of hot rocks and sat on a rush mat.

Thunder Bear kept stirring up the logs, poking and breaking up the wood to burn better.

“The seasons are true.” Nothing like what Edie experienced in the twenty-first century. The November cold was a bone-chilling awakening to reality. Shoomis had spoken about the weather many times and the changes to Mother Earth from his childhood. He’d also mentioned in the even older days, snow could become thigh high. Minus twenty-five Celsius was the average temperature come winter.

“Of course they are.” Thunder Bear set aside the stick.
