Brewer’s Yeast
Brewer’s yeast is a by-product of the beer-making process and is often used as a nutritional supplement due to its high content of B vitamins, iron, protein, chromium, and selenium. While other components of beer such as barley and barley malt have been researched as galactagogues in humans, brewer’s yeast has not. There are some animal studies that show that when a lactating animal’s diet is fortified with brewer’s yeast, the offspring of these mammals gain weight more efficiently and are healthier overall.16 Studies have attributed this phenomenon to the improved nutritional status of the mother.17
Brewer’s yeast is very bitter, so look for a brand that has “reduced bitterness.” Brewer’s yeast does pass readily into breast milk, and anecdotal evidence shows that, in some babies, this can cause gas and fussiness. When adding brewer’s yeast to recipes, you typically have to compensate by adding a great deal of sugar to mask its bitter flavor. As a dietitian, I am always looking to reduce the intake of added sugars rather than increasing them, so I typically do not recommend much, if any, brewer’s yeast for lactation support.
There is no clinically established dosage of brewer’s yeast for lactation support. Generally, 500 to 1,000 mg a day of brewer’s yeast in tablet form is thought to be the most effective. However, as I previously noted, there is an increased risk of gassiness in infants when mothers ingest brewer’s yeast, and this risk is greater when it is taken in supplement form and not derived from food.
