Chapter 13
Collette left work mid-afternoon on Thursday and let Jody close up. She was almost taking Melodyâs advice. It wasnât a full day off, but it was a few hours. That counted, right?
Feeling proud of herself, she decided to head to Sea Glass Cafe and indulge in a large vanilla shake. Or maybe a slice of pie with a scoop of ice cream. Either sounded like a great way to celebrate her time off.
She entered the cafe and wound her way back to the counter, slipping onto a stool. Melody came out from the back. âHey, Collette.â
âI took your advice. See? I left early. Decided to reward myself with some ice cream.â
âI kind of meant a whole day.â Melody laughed as she moved behind the counter. âWhat can I get for you? We have fresh peach pie.â
âOh, that sounds good. A slice of pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.â
Melody quickly fixed the dessert and slid it across the counter. âI have to admit, when I took a break earlier, I had a piece of that pie, too. So good.â
She took a bite of the flaky, cinnamon-sweet pie with a bit of the ice cream. It really was a decadent delight, and she savored the taste. She plunged her fork in for another bite.
âOh, look. Thereâs Mark.â Melody waved. âHey, Mark. Come on over.â
She swiveled slightly on the stool and saw him hesitate before slowly walking back to the counter. Why the hesitation? Was he avoiding her? The thought just popped into her mind, unbidden. Then it roared to the front of her mind.
âMark.â She nodded at him, not asking him to join her.
âHey Collette, Melody. I ran into the Jenkins twins and they told me how great the ice cream was here and I thought Iâd come try it.â
âTake a seat. What would you like?â
He glanced above the counter at the list of all the delicious options. âI think Iâll have a chocolate sundae.â
âGood choice. We have the very best chocolate sauce ever and freshly made whipped cream.â Melody busied herself with making the sundae.
Mark sat down beside her. She was adamant that this did not count as her asking him to join her. He came in of his own accord. Melody invited him over. This was not her fault. This did not break her promise to not invite him to do anything with her.
She stabbed the pie and took another bite as silence fell between them. He shifted on his seat, his knee bumping into her.
âOh, sorry,â he said quickly.
âNo problem.â She gently pried another tiny bite of the pie. Because suddenly, she wanted the treat to last a good long time. About as long as it took Mark to eat his sundae.
Melody slid the sundae over to Mark, along with a long spoon. âEnjoy. Iâve got to run to the kitchen and load another stack of dishes. Iâll be back out to check on you.â
Mark took a bite of his sundae. She took a bite of her pie.
