Chapter Twelve

Several days later…

Gary

Gary paced the backroom while Frank violently pounded on the door.

“What?” Gary shouted angrily. He couldn’t think. Not like this. Not with all that noise.

“Rosita is dying because of you!” Frank complained, the threat hidden in the dark undertones of his sharp and deadly voice.

“I don’t care about Rosita or any of your other plants,” he said, wishing them all dead and for his roommate to leave.

“Her leaves have wilted. She’s beyond the point of saving. This is all your fault.”

“I said I don’t care!” Gary growled and threw something large against the door.

The shockingly loud crash made him flinch and when he saw the shattered remains of the antique relic a friend had once given him long ago, Gary felt bad. He didn’t mean to break it. He didn’t want to break it. But like all things beautiful, they never lasted.

His time with Laura didn’t. That night with her was much too short, not nearly enough time to satiate his need for her. One moment he had the entire world at his fingertips. Anything was possible. And now? Now all he had was a whiny kid named Cornelius and a destroyed gift.

Something inside him broke that night. Shattered into more pieces than the relic had.

Gary’s heart constricted. He didn’t understand love. He didn’t know how it worked or what to do about it. He didn’t know how to handle it or how to process it. He knew absolutely nothing about love and yet there was one thing he did know…He was in love with Laura.

His pace quickened, the angry breaths sawing out of him deepening.

Gary knew it was only supposed to be a booty call, that’s what Laura had listed on her profile. It was what he had listed on his profile. Monster Match wasn’t a lover’s app. It wasn’t meant to be used to find mates. But that’s exactly what Gary had found and he felt stupid for not realizing it sooner.

All those nights he’d spent with Amy, spending time with her like a father would a child. All those endless hours watching over them both from the shadows. All of that. The truth was there the whole time. Laura was his and now he’d lost her completely.

His fists clenched, the blunt nails which he’d clipped to blend into society while on his date with Laura dug into his palms. Black ooze dripped onto the floor, mixing with the crimson blood of his last meal.

He squeezed his eyes shut.

That look on her face when she’d discovered the truth, or rather, when he’d exposed himself to her in full, showed her the monster beneath the facade he wore in public. Amy knew who Gary was, accepted him for all that he was. Why couldn’t she? The love of his life? The one who made the black blood in his heart pump each beat. Why couldn’t Laura want Gary the way he wanted her?

Gary froze, locked in that moment with her, unable to shake the rejection.

She’d asked for a moment but then left in a hurry.
