New respect blossomed for Agent Bob. Holy cats, it turned out he’s fucking great at what he does. Daisy built a from scratch supply list of how to build the perfect psychic realm, tent edition, while Mama, perched on a tall kitchen stool, fried a redonkulous amount of chicken. They both reviewed it, and Bobberino, AKA the requisition sensation, got busy.

Delilah and I dragged long, heavy wooden tables from the barn and sprayed them with the garden hose. Once the sun dried them, we covered them with sheets from the big linen closet upstairs. Pitchers of tea and water, butter dishes, and a pile of plates and silverware later, those sheets weren’t going anywhere. Agents working the crime scene carted the last body from the woods, then formed a line to wash hands at the outside faucet. More chicken than I’d ever seen in one meal moved out on giant platters. Baskets of biscuits, crocks of baked beans, several jumbo bowls of greens with bacon, and a soup tureen filled with something I learned were field peas and snaps followed.

My southern epicurean education continues.

Why the fuck I pulled stubborn teenage shit and balked at Granny’s cooking would irk me until the day I die. So much lost time. I was going to enjoy adding those future fifteen pounds to my middle.

Mama fed twenty people as if she did this stuff all the time. She slid into her seat, gazed around the gathered, and pointed at BB. “Say the blessing, please.”

Oh boy.

Billy grinned, looked around at the big table, then mimicked us and clasped his hands.

“The universe is shifting, we live in eye-opening times, and we are grateful to be here. There’s good food for the body, knowledge for the curious mind, and we’ve survived another attack.”

Mama raised an eyebrow, which BB interpreted accurately.

“For the cosmic threads that came together for this meal to happen, and Mama’s excellent cooking, we’re thankful.”

She nodded, adding, “In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”

Billy looked down at his raw chicken wing tips laying over a mess of unpeeled carrots and a mound of aging bananas and grinned. “Thanks, Mama Cafferey. This looks delicious.”

“You’re an odd little squirt, but I’m glad you approve. If you eat a piece of the good stuff, nobody here will snitch.”
