Chapter 19
Jonathan sank into the soft, cushiony chair. It was one of those long, fancy chairs that added twelve hundred dollars to the price of the living room suit. Jonathan's burning eyes closed. His mind drifted back to the day his wife had talked--no, badgered--him into purchasing such an expensive piece of furniture.
"It's not a sin to buy something nice, Jonathan," she had argued.
He had looked at the chair and frowned. "I know, but how many little orphans could brother Balais in the Philippines feed with twelve-hundred dollars?"
"Quite a bit." Elizabeth turned to the toothy salesman. "Yes, we'll take it, and he'll love it later."
Jonathan had not protested. If this had been anyone else, he might have been tempted to think her to be another product of American Christianity: self-centered and materialistic.
But this was Elizabeth. She was the most selfless and devoted Christian lady he'd ever known. No matter where in the world God had called them, the Philippines, Mexico, Haiti, New York City--it didn't matter. His wife never complained. She was at home among the poor and the rich. Stuff just didnât have a hold on her. She was such a wonderful gift of God.
Jonathan smiled. Elizabeth was right. He did like this chair, all twelve hundred dollars of it. His tired body conformed to the contour of the chair. In a moment, he was asleep.
A couple of minutes later his eyes popped open. I have to write some letters. He got up softly and tried to creep out of the living room.
"And where are you going?" the unexpected voice surprised him.
"Uumm, uh, I"--he knew he was caught--"well, I was just going to write a few letters."
Elizabeth's mouth turned up in disapproval.
"Brother Giminez's church has been on my mind. You know, with the guerillas and all." His wife's expression didn't change. "Columbia has gotten even more dangerous since FARC...." His voice withered under Elizabeth's dispassionate look.
"You're not too big to be put over my knee," she said.
Jonathan opened his mouth to protest, but Elizabeth cut him off. She knew his defense better than he did.
"I know, the Lord is coming soon and we have to work while it is day, because the night cometh when no man can work. We are our brother's keeper, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera."
Jonathan smiled in submission. He knew he was licked.
"You can't win the world all by yourself, and even if you could, it couldn't be done overnight. My goodness, even Jesus rested. You think maybe there's a chance that Jesus wasn't as spiritual as you?"
Jonathan shook his head in mock agreement. Lady's on a roll. Just have to grin and bear it.
Elizabeth placed her hand on her hips. "Am I making myself clear?"
Jonathan looked at his wife. Her physical beauty matched the beauty of her spirit. She was such a lovely creature. She normally only wore pants when they were out of country, when the rigors of their missionary work demanded it. But sometimes she wore them around the house. This was one of those times.
