Chapter 14

The day of the Bone River trial arrived without a whisper. No one in the Potens’ classes spoke of the upcoming test, and an air of fear hung over the bone halls. Flynt had her own secrets to carry and sank into the silence, watching and waiting for an opportunity to investigate Nekolai’s suspicions. Bone River might be a good place for that, as well as a time to observe what the test entailed.

In the cafeteria, Flynt sipped at her soy drink and picked bits of crust off bread to nibble on. The silence in the room was oppressive, and Flynt only remained in case Azucena decided to come to eat. When her friend didn’t show up and the last drops of her morning concoction were gone, Flynt stood to leave. The scrape of her bone chair boomed in the space and several other Potens glanced up.

Flynt found Azucena seated on her bed, staring at the wall.

Her throat tight with worry, Flynt sat next to her friend. Her own fears and plans seemed to disappear faced with the drawn expression of Azucena’s face. Everything else could wait. This day was for Azucena and Bone River. “Let’s get you ready.”

Azucena looked over. “I’m scared.”

“I know. Let’s give you something else to feel.” Flynt leaned in and brushed her lips over Azucena’s.

Azucena drew away, her fingers lifting to touch her lips. Then she blushed and looked away.

Okay, so that was not the right approach. Flynt had to remember that not everyone found sex as calming as she did.

Flynt would make this moment perfect for Azucena, and she should take a note from Lem on how to do so. People were more likely to succeed if they went into a task confident—that wasn’t just Flynt. No matter what the test to come was, there could be perfection leading up to it. She went to her bag and started to pull out the cosmetics onto her bed, but that wasn’t enough, not for this. After grabbing the box with her jewelry, Flynt returned to her friend and lifted the lid.

As hoped, Azucena’s eyes shed that lost look and went wide with wonder. “I can’t wear any of that. It’s…”

Flynt pulled out an emerald ear-clip and a matching choker with three dainty emerald drips. “Nonsense. These are yours now.”

“No, I couldn’t.”

Flynt opened the ear-clip and slipped it over the top of Azucena’s ear, letting the gem hang down. “I’m not asking. I’m giving. And when I do my own Bone River trial—you’ll be waiting for me.”

Azucena touched the jewel. “This is so beautiful.”

Flynt hooked the choker on her friend’s neck. “You’re wearing it, not the other way around.”

“They’re going to have you watch—it’s customary. If I sink…”

“We’ll deal with that if it happens.” Flynt tucked the word “sink” away for later. Maybe Flynt’s assumption had been wrong and this was an actual river. This was the second time Azucena had mentioned going under in the river. It really wasn’t the time to drill Azucena for details.
