Ever since man first took flight, some aircrew have been notoriously superstitious. For some it is merely a matter of not walking under ladders, but for others there have been a variety of routines before flight or the odd lucky charm or two carried on the person whilst flying. The carrying of lucky charms seems to be particularly evident during wartime operations and this attitude to luck was purely down to the individual; it was a case of whatever worked for one would be laughed at by another but superstition and luck was certainly taken seriously by many of the No. 50 Sqn aircrew at Skellingthorpe. It was considered somewhat dicey if one of the sergeant aircrew had not listened at least once to The Shrine of St Cecilia’, written by Pern Jokern and Carroll Loveday and recorded by the Andrew Sisters in 1941, on the record player in the mess before taking off on an operation.

Our home is a shambles, all I treasured has gone.

The town seems deserted, everyone’s so forlorn.

A storm came from up above but somehow it missed

The shrine of Saint Cecilia.
