Chapter Twenty-One

I NEED AN ADULT

Aiden

This is going to be a rough day. My back aches from sleeping on this couch. It figures that with all the camping I've done, sleeping in tree stands and the like, that it's a common couch that gets me.

“Wake the fuck up, Aiden.” Trish rattles my shoulder.

“I'm up,” I groan.

“You've got to get moving. I can't get Eli to get in the shower and we have to get him there on time.” Her shrill voice goes through my head like a hangover. I didn't even drink last night, but I should have. It's worth it, though, to keep Eli dry, at least for now.

“I'll get him moving.” I swing my legs around until my feet touch the floor. “Have you heard from Shay?”

She lets out an exasperated breath, “No, I haven't.”

“Have you called or texted?” I ask her.

“No, asshole, I sent her a message with the power of my brain hoping she might pick up on it.” She puts her hand on her hip.

I contemplate firing back at her. “All I wanted to know is that you've tried to talk to her today. I think Eli would really appreciate it if she were there.”

“I have no idea what she's doing. I'm not her keeper.” She goes into the kitchen. “There's coffee.”

“Thank you.” I make my way into the kitchen and Eli shuffles out.

“What time are we leaving?” He's zombified. I can't blame him.

“It starts at noon.” I think about it for a minute. “We should probably get there around eleven.”

“Is that which one we're going to today?” He sits at the breakfast bar. “I can't keep track.”

“Yeah, Preston’s funeral is today.” I try to keep up and remember whose funeral is when.

“We all need a fucking Day Timer just to keep our funeral schedule straight.” Trish shakes her head. “Speaking of, how much longer are you two going to need to be here?”

I look at Eli, I know his place hasn't been cleaned up. I'm sure that Uncle Bryce has already handled the clean-up, but that doesn't mean I won't be changing rooms. “We can probably go to my house tonight. I'll need to check with Bryce.”

“Okay, it's not like I don't love our sleepovers, but I actually hate you two and hate having you in my house even more.” She takes her coffee. “I'll be in the bathroom.”

“I was going to take a shower,” I call after her.

“Not my problem.” She closes the bathroom door.

Eli sits silently, but I can see the wheels turning. “I can get a hotel tonight.”

“Don't worry about it. As long as Bryce has had the clean-up crew in, we can go to my house.” I lean against the breakfast bar.

“I was kind of hoping to go somewhere that there hasn't been a murder.” He shakes his head.

“Well, those places are becoming harder and harder to find.” I blow out a breath. “But not to worry, I'm moving to the east wing of the house, there's three bedrooms over there, you can have one of them.
