stronger than a man; if Figan grew up and realized how much weaker humans really were, he would become dangerous. More over, repeated contact with a wild animal is bound to affect its behavior. We made a rule that in the future no student should purposefully make contact with any of the chimpanzees.

Edna and Sonia, who also had soon learned to make accurate observations, kept things going for almost a year on their own. Since then we have had a constant stream of research assistants working at Gombe. Gradually our research program has expanded so that for the past few years we have offered facilities to those wishing to study baboon and red colobus behavior. Some students have worked at the Gombe for one year as my research assistants, keeping up the all-important general record of the behavior of known chimpanzees; most of these young people had B.A. degrees, and all put in hours and hours of work and added considerably to our knowledge of chimpanzees. Some of them elected to stay on for a second year working as research students on some chosen aspect of chimpanzee behavior.

In 1967 there was a major change in the status of the Gomhc Stream: it was taken over by Tanzania National Parks and became the Gombe National Park. Game Department scouts gave place to National Parks rangers with their own quarters down in the southern section of the park. Together with the National Parks authorities, we are slowly working our way toward opening a second feeding station, in the southern area, for the benefit of interested tourists and visitors. For two years students have been working in the proposed area, living on their own, trying to habituate the chimpanzees of the southern group, as in i960 I struggled to get our own group accustomed to me.

The Gombe Stream Research Centre has gradually expanded. Today there are eight small sleeping houses up at the observation area, nesding out of sight in the surrounding trees. There are three larger buildings down on the beach, and three more huts for the students working on baboons and monkeys. The African staff alone have quite a "village" at the beach grouped around the house of old Iddi Matata. Dominic and Sadiki and Rashidi all are with us still, and there are many more. It cannot be said that conditions at the Gombe Stream Research Centre are in any sense luxurious, but the facilities are more than adequate for young people who love animals, exciting and fascinating research—and hard work.

The biggest challenge we have faced at any time has been the actual presentation of the bananas: how to offer them in a way most similar to a natural food supply, and so as to affect as little as possible the social behavior of the chimpanzees. There has been much trial and error throughout the years.

To start with we gave the chimps bananas whenever they came into camp. It was so exciting to Hugo and me to be able to
