Creonâs Defense
Phineas Ort awoke late and, without disturbing DeeDee, extricated himself from the bed. He could smell fresh croissants and strong coffee. Reynald, as always, had prepared a bracing breakfast. As Phineas dressed, he smiled to himself. Events had turned out better than one might have expected. DeeDee regularly enabled him to pop his cork and even taught him a few tricks that Phineas thought more Roman than Greek, tricks that should be kept from married couples, he felt, lest that fragile institution be undermined by the knowledge that sex is best when itâs dirty.
DeeDee stirred and murmured. Phineas divined that she was asking him a question and requested she repeat it.
âI want more,â he heard her say, but the rest of the sentence was lost in the blankets.
âMore,â he exclaimed, âwe did it three times!â
âNo, not that. I want more of Antigone. Jackie Brown led you on a wild goose chase when he wanted to know about the gods. After all the stories you told about Zeus and Hera and Achilles and all them others, my headâs spinning. Letâs get back to the play.â
Phineas reflected a moment before responding. Having been trained as a professor, he felt obliged to explain how art imitates life and the importance of context. âThe function of the gods in Greek literature must be understood. One must have some familiarity with the role they play in lifeâs unfolding drama.â He smiled in admiration of his own exposition.
DeeDee flounced out of bed, threw off her shift, shook her pendulous bosom for Phineasâs sake, and shouted as she grabbed a stick of gum and entered the bathroom, âWait for breakfast. I just wanna take a quick shower.â
Like a great many people, she did her best thinking under the influence of hot water. It relaxed her and set her flesh tingling. In the shower she plotted a romance novel, her favorite genre, which would begin with a mysterious stranger showing up in Schroon Lake during the off season, where he meets a beautiful woman strikingly similar to DeeDee Lite. Her first sentence would read, âHe suddenly appeared out of nowhere, tall, very tall, blonde, and sort of handsome.â
Phineas finished breakfast and turned, as he had every morning since arriving, to the large dining-room table, where the group had read Antigone out loud several times and now, given his explanation of the Greek gods, were prepared to discuss the knotty moral issues or, as Jackie Brown called them, the ball busters.
Waiting for Reynald and DeeDee to load the dishwasher, he looked over his notes for the dayâs lesson. Eddie and Jackie, who had been having a smoke on the deck, joined him.
âWe was, if yous can believe it, talking about Creon. Me and Eddie,â said Jackie proudly. âThatâs my part. I gotta lot of things to worry about if Iâm duh king.â Jackie went on to share his thoughts about the importance of not being âdisrespected,â while conceding that âif there ainât no honor among thieves, youâre headinâ for a fall.
