Chapter Ten

Bob returned to the fight out in the streets. He liberated one store after another. Store owners and thugs alike called out his superhero name when he entered the store. Bob was a red gust of justice as he took out criminals and defended the stores.

After protecting his fifth store, he got a phone call from Ned.

“Hey! What’s going on?” Bob said.

“They got my parents. Reginald said to meet him at the Sunside Piers.” He sounded emotionless, like he was poorly holding back a dam of tears.

Sunside Piers were a busy and massive hub of bars, businesses, and warehouses. It would be busy at this time of night with people visiting the bars and cops watching for late night illegal shipments. That meant Reginald planned to take them to a secondary location, which was never good news. Cops and investigators rarely found people who moved to a secondary location. Bob didn’t have a choice, though. The mess he caused now involved both his parents and Ned’s parents.

“I’m so sorry, Ned. It’s my fault they’re in this situation.”

“We can blame later. Where are you?”

“I’m on Jesper street and Knot. I’ll tell Charlie to pick me up.”

He heard Charlie’s car before he saw it. The engine’s sound ricocheted off the walls and struck fear in the thugs’ hearts. All the ones he saw ran in opposite directions, which he was happy to see since he wanted to conserve his energy. The constant fights, running around, and lack of sleep took their toll.

The car came to a screeching halt. Ned lowered the passenger side window, letting out an unholy stench of dozens of different foods, sweat and blood, some of which were his own. Charlie was in slightly better shape, probably from his metal helmet. There were nicks and scratches on his face, his knuckles red. Ned had a black eye, welts, and long cuts along his arms. Some sticky yellow substance matted his hair and stained his hairline. They both looked tired.

Bob enjoyed the last moments of fresh air and hopped into the car. They sped off to Sunside Piers.

After arriving, they puttered into the fenced off area, beyond which he could see almost a hundred of Reginald’s men walking around, muttering to each other. There were two operating the gate. After peeking into the car, they waved Charlie in, and he drove through slowly.

The thugs sneered and whispered among themselves. Once they spotted the car, they seemed to wait until the last moment to step aside. There were so many of them, and they were so densely packed. They snickered and hollered at the superheroes. Some even banged on the glass and kicked the sides of the car.

Then they saw Reginald. He sat on a crate in a new Hawaiian shirt, purple with pink salmon covering it like polka dots, but everything else about him was the same. Same bowl haircut. Same khaki shorts. Next to him was Sarah, who also sat on a crate, dressed as elegantly as the last time Bob saw her at his parent’s yacht club induction ceremony.
