âI take back what I said.â Carol stretched out on the couch, her feet propped on the opposite padded arm.
Dwayne and Armando were playing quietly in their room, and Morgan had followed, most likely, to pester them.
âWhich was?â A glass of water warmed in Tansyâs hand, the cloudy ice cubes melting away.
âThat he wouldnât last.â
Surprised Carol admitted to that, Tansy didnât respond.
âNever found one I cared to spend a great deal of time with ... for that same reason,â Carol continued, âbut ...â She halted.
Tansy lowered her glass to the end table and settled it in the midst of the ring formed in the stain.
âThe fact he didnât take off when faced with everything has impressed me. Plus, I saw him look at you.â
Tansyâs face warmed. She brushed her fingertips across her cheeks.
âDonât know why that makes you blush. Youâve been pretty bold since you moved here. There was that one I caught you with ... there in my own room. You werenât embarrassed then.â
âIt isnât embarrassment. Itâs ...â
What? Feelings. Emotions. A strange sense of her being incredibly female and him, a male. She had no explanation for that.
Carol flapped her hand. âWhatever it is, Iâm glad for you to find someone solid. You canât live here forever.â
Tansyâs stomach tensed. That was true, and sheâd thought of it more than once. But to leave Dwayne and Armando, to abandon Morgan was unthinkable. They needed her, and she needed them.
She pushed to her feet, willing any thought of separation away. âIâd better make sure theyâve done their homework.â
Carol said nothing. But then, everything about the children, over time, had fallen to her.
That was the other reason she couldnât bear to leave. No one would pick up the slack. Thereâd be no one to do their laundry, see that they were fed and bathed.
She stood in the doorway to the boysâ bedroom and leaned on the doorframe. Morgan had ensconced herself in Dwayneâs bed, a plastic tea set in her lap. Armando was leaning over the side waving a video game console beneath Dwayneâs nose.
Tansy smiled. The only way sheâd ever leave was if she could take them with her, but how would she do that? She had no job, no home, nothing that recommended her.
And it took way more than knowing how much she loved them, though sometimes, the size of that was almost more than she could bear.
