Chapter Nine

“What about you, Connor?” Haley refused to back down. These guys had families that their irresponsible decisions would affect.

“Why are you poking your nose in other folks’ lives?” Connor narrowed his brows and eyed her. “It ain’t none of your business.”

“True, but all of you have someone who loves you, and what you’re doing only hurts them more.” Haley pulled her legs up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.

“Escaping sounded intriguing and I like tough challenges.” Mac spoke up. “Figured I’d get to see my wife and two kids sooner. We would move away and have a new life in Hawaii after I robbed a few banks and got us a couple of bags of cash. Didn’t think about getting caught and what that meant for them.”

“My brother said he’d meet me in California. He’s rented a condo close to the beach,” Connor said. “We’ll live off our parents’ inheritance and hang out on the beach for the rest of our lives. I’m gonna change my identity so no one can find me.”

Haley turned to her cousin. “Blake, what about you?”

Blake raked his hand across the cave floor and brushed up a small pile of sand and pebbles. He pursed his lips and looked up at her. “Still debating on what my next move will be. Me and the guys had everything planned out, but after trying to escape this prison of fire, I’d be better off hanging out in my cell.”

“Aw, man, you don’t mean that,” Mac said. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Thinking about my parents and how disappointed they are in me, well, especially my mom, kinda twists an ache in my gut. Dad likes to watch the world through the bottom of a whiskey bottle, so his sense of time is diluted and hazy.”

“Stop talking nonsense, Blake.” Connor sat up and turned to Haley. “We celebrated all the way to your cabin once he saw your name on the registry. When J.R. arrived, we stashed those jumpsuits in your car.” Then he yawned and scooted down against the wall. “Thanks for leaving it unlocked.”

“Unbelievable.” Haley twisted a strand of hair and pulled out a leaf.

“Some guy showed up at your cabin door demanding your satellite phone. We had to take him down so he couldn’t identify us. Then Kendall and those other firefighters came barreling inside. We scuffled a minute and ran out the door.” Mac chewed on a piece of grass. “Falling backward and knocking yourself out wasn’t part of the plan. We did what we had to do. Couldn’t carry you, so we ran.”

“He’s not dead,” Kendall said. “One of my team members helped him to safety.”

Connor sat up. “You mean he got away and now the police know about us?”

“Where have you been, Connor?” Blake tossed a small stone at Connor. “I can just hear the top story on the morning news, ‘Forest Service firefighter rescues female from cabin and is taken hostage by three escapees and a rogue prison guard. These men are considered armed and dangerous.
