He didn’t see Barrett again, and maybe that was for the best. Instead of looking for the pilot, Mancini went around the base trying to get a feel for it. The place was packed with people earlier in the day, men and women going about business that had nothing to do with him, but that number thinned out noticeably as nightfall approached. Many of the soldiers left in land vehicles, joined by two of the Warthogs. And those were just the ones he saw. He didn’t know where they were going or why, and he didn’t care.

“Tonight. Bring him. Look for the sign.”

The creatures hadn’t made contact again, for which Mancini was thankful. Taking orders from the monsters was something out of a bad nightmare that he couldn’t wake up from no matter how hard he tried. The fact that he used to be a slayer, who hunted them down, made it somehow…worse.

As he walked around the base, taking in the sights and sounds of Black Tiders at work, he had to remind himself that he didn’t know these people. He’d never met a single one of them before today (with, obviously, the exception of Barrett and Hartford). As for everyone else…

I don’t owe them anything. But I owe Katie everything.

She was counting on him. Failing here, now, would be like failing her a second time. The first was back at Creighton when he and the other slayers had failed spectacularly to save the townspeople. Her people. He couldn’t let that happen again. He couldn’t do anything about Creighton’s population, but he could still do everything about its leader.

Think about Katie. That’s all that matters. Saving her in the here and now.

Whatever happened after today, tonight, and the days to come was for other people to deal with. His only commitment was to Katie. Her, and her only.

Save Katie. Whatever you do, save Katie!

He spent most of the day trying to figure out how to get into the morgue, which looked like any of the dozens of other buildings the Black Tiders had erected. It became obvious to Mancini that a good portion of the assembled forces had gone to take part in whatever night mission he’d seen them preparing for all day. Helicopters came and went, along with vehicles and manpower. By the start of evening, there was a calmness to the base that bordered on eerie. Or maybe that was just how he read the situation.

It’s almost time.

He still needed to wait for “the sign” they had promised him. The fact that he didn’t know what it was made the task a lot harder. But Mancini had a feeling he’d know when he saw it. Or heard it. Whatever “it” turned out to be.

They’d put him in one of the civilian barracks near the edge of the base. He was given his own cot and spent hours watching people coming and going. Most were helpers, locals from the nearby Shaker Town, that had volunteered. He knew they were
