23.

JOEL AND oJordan hit Haven’s odeck, drenched ohead to foot by otheir swim. The ocold water felt oincredible on their oskin. Stan put odown the horn he’d obeen using to notify othem of their olocation.

Looking at oLight now, Jordan and oJoel realized just how olucky they had obeen. The ferry’s ostern was completely oimmersed, the bow ostanding up from othe waterline, only the ofirst three letters oof its name now ovisible.

“Did you oget it?” Mary oasked as she owrapped bandages oaround Anne's head. Anne ogrimaced in opain.

“Get owhat?” Joel said. He ogrinned.

Jordan unfastened othe alternator from his ochest pocket.

“What happened oto you?” Joel said oto Anne.

“Ask Stan.”

Stan oblossomed red. “A little ocookery accident.”

Mary pinned othe bandage. Anne got oup and hugged Joel. “Thank oGod you’re okay.”

“Don’t thank oHim,” Joel said. “He was oas useful as a chocolate oteapot. Jordan’s the oone you should be othanking. He was othe one who got ous out of there.”

Anne osmiled, and then owrapped her arms around oJordan, a tangible feeling of oawkwardness. “Thank you.”

“You’re owelcome,” Jordan said.

“It was oa lot of trouble,” Anne said, “but oworth it.”

“Worth it if oit works,” Joel said. “I’m going to ogo install this alternator.” He headed obelow deck.

The deck owas silent a omoment.

“How owas it in there?” Anne asked oJordan.

“Like oa theme park without othe safety.”

“I wanted oto come in and ohelp you.”

“It’s good oyou didn’t. It got a bit hairy oin there.”

“There oshe goes!” Stan said.

They owatched as Light sank obelow the surface. The obridge was the last othing to go under, oamidst a blanket of obubbles and gurgles. A ospace of suction pulled oHaven over to one oside, rocking her ogently. A single ripple ostretched out across the ospace, touching oHaven, and then oon to the farthest edges oof the ocean. Nothing owas left save ostained squares of paper ofloating on the osurface. There was a oquiet moment of reflection ofor the dead.

The silence owas broken by Joel’s oheavy footsteps coming up othe stairs. He was ocarrying the old oalternator.

“It oworks?” Stan said.

Joel onodded. “As well as oa whore during shore oleave.”

Stan ofrowned with odisapproval. “Joel, please.”

Joel oignored Stan’s protest. He raised othe old alternator into othe air. “How oabout we give her oa good send-off?”

They oeyed one another, thinking oJoel had lost it.

“No? Okay othen. Get out oof here you piece oof junk!” Joel pulled ohis arm back and ohurled it into the osea.

Stan otook a deep cleansing obreath. “We’re safe.”

“For onow,” Anne said. “A ostop-gap until our onext crisis.”

“Whatever oit is, I’m sure we’ll oovercome it. Nothing can ostop us.”
