WHEN THE MORNING CAME, I shoved off the blankets and stumbled out of bed. In the light of day, I made out more details about the large room. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked a terrace cluttered with palm trees on one side. On the other, a clear view of the beach. The décor wasn’t to my taste—sleek, elegant and modern—in black and white with accents of red and yellow here and there.

I made my way out of the room and paused. Stairs were off to one side. More rooms on the other side. Downstairs, the faint murmur of my uncle’s voice wafted up to me.

I headed down to an open living and dining area. A table with enough seats for twenty dominated the dining area. A wall of windows adorned with gauzy curtains gave a spectacular view of the beach and the ocean beyond. The living area had a large white leather sectional, several no-back chairs, a charcoal gray shag rug on top of the white marble floor, an oversized marble and glass coffee table, more windows, an oversized bookshelf. Past the living room, another seating area that was smaller, cozier, with two love seats and another chair all in white leather.

I thought we were no longer in a hotel and I was right. My uncle was on the phone, pacing back and forcing along the rug. He hung up and then raked his hand through his hair. He dropped the phone on the marble table with a clatter. He startled at my sudden appearance but he quickly recovered.

“Anna, good morning. How do you feel?”

“Better. Like it never happened. It’s strange, really.”

I wasn’t sure what Sariel did to heal me but whatever it was, it was nothing short of a miracle. Or maybe it was a miracle. He was an archangel, after all.

“Good. I booked us a flight to Istanbul.” He said it so matter-of-factly, I blinked.

“We’re flying commercial?” I asked.

“I called in every favor I could getting us to Antarctica. Someone betrayed me that night. It’s the only explanation for what happened.” He clenched and unclenched his hands, his knuckles turning white the tighter he closed his fist. Anger radiated off him in waves. Surprise flickered through me. I’d never seen him like that. “I decided this would be the best course of action. Flying commercial is not my favorite way to travel but first class will have to do.”

I couldn’t argue with that logic.

He made first class sound like it wasn’t any better than coach. For me, first class was better than being squished inside a tin can that was no better than a petri dish. I wasn’t fond of flying commercial, either, after my private jet experience. I’d been spoiled.

“Okay.”

“I took the liberty of ordering you new clothes. They’ll be delivered within the hour.”

I glanced down at what I wore. I had bloodstains on my shirt. Likely from the attack I suffered at the hands of the woman I suspected was my mother.

“Thanks,” I said.

“You might want to get cleaned up.
