Prescott and the Cowboys in mid-June conducted their final mandatory camp at the team’s sprawling, sparkling facility, The Star in Frisco, Texas. It was a reminder for Prescott that this offseason work was unlike that of his rookie year. This time he was the starter gaining the majority of reps. He was the starter sharpening his mental game as much as his physical one. He was the anointed franchise quarterback helping to set the tone on how the Cowboys work and the view on exactly where they are going.

All in the organization expect his leadership to flourish in training camp, the preseason, and into the 2017 regular season.

His confidence in this camp was compelling.

“I think confidence in the NFL is one of the most underrated traits you can have,” Prescott said. “Everybody is capable at this level. But do you really believe you can do it?”

Prescott cultivates that characteristic among the Cowboys.

This scene during that mid-June camp revealed the type of powerful examples he sets while all eyes are on him.

Raymond “Ray Ray” Melgarejo was at that Cowboys camp from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Melgarejo, age nine, a California kid, had a brain tumor removed from the back of his head. It was discovered while he was putting on his football helmet. His family says that football saved his life.

Prescott connected with the boy in a dynamic way. He invited him onto the practice field. He instructed him to deliver a handoff to Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott allowed Malgarejo to stand next to him during his news conference with the media. He advised him on confidence.

He inspired him.

He made a wish come true in a veritable, tolerant, earnest way with everyone watching.

“This is the thing we’re talking about that Dak has that you can’t teach, you can’t create, it’s just there,” teammate Jason Witten said. “It’s natural. People feel better around Dak. They believe. He’s got the talent. But he’s got this thing that matters just as much.

“There is a hunger here for a championship that we feel every day. Every conversation that I have every day with Jerry [Jones], I feel it rising from the pit of his stomach. It’s just there. It’s real. And Dak wants it as much as any of us. You just have to have that in your quarterback in this league to have any chance. We do.”
